The essence of digital transformation

All this can be a huge challenge for traditional businesses, whose leaders may not be digital natives at heart but who are being forced to recognise and adapt to a fundamental cultural shift, nonetheless. They are having to make almost instant decisions (unlike when compared to a generation ago) for the whole organisation (rather than a single department).

The company that embraces digital transformation will be secure, flexible, scalable, and agile. This goes for the technology it embraces and the people who make it work. Digital transformation is about changing culture and process within an organisation, as well as the technology – those other parts are arguably the hardest to change and are typically where the real transformation challenges are.

Digital evolution is a more fitting description as coupled with speed of change, there are ongoing, iterative steps to digital improvement versus having a fixed (or in most cases moving) transformation destination. This journey is most likely to have many destinations, and if planned holistically with customer expectations and staff processes and culture at the centre, the roadmap will be an evolutionary one for the entire organisation.

So, what is digital transformation?

It is a nebulous term that organisations will understand differently depending on their specific circumstances and requirements. But at its core it isn't about adopting Office 365 or moving your email server to AWS. As we have established, these are destinations within the transformation journey. However true digital transformation is about creating businesses that reflect our new digital culture in everything they do, utilising technologies and continually improving customer experiences and staff processes & culture to that end. This we term, Digital Evolution.
